Virtual Grand National 2020 Runners
List of the major runners and riders for the 2020 Virtual Grand National
The 2020 Grand National may have been cancelled due to the outbreak of coronavirus, but ITV will instead broadcast a Virtual Grand National on Saturday, April 4.
A total of 40 runners and riders will compete in the Virtual Grand National, which will be broadcast from 5pm and utilises CGI technology and special algorithms.
The weights for the race are headed by Tiger Roll, who had been set to bid for a third Grand National, a feat achieved only by the legendary Red Rum.
There is betting available on the Virtual Grand National, with stakes limited to £10 win or £10 each-way per customer, per horse. All profits made by bookmakers will be donated to the NHS.
The 2020 Grand National will take place at Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool, on Saturday 4th April and like the 2018 and 2019 renewals, will be sponsored by Randox Health. The 2019 renewal – shown on ITV – was won by Tiger Roll, trained by Gordon Elliot and ridden by Davy Russell. Tiger Roll was winning the race for the second successive year, becoming the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to achieve such a feat.
The racing at Aintree begins on Thursday – otherwise known as Grand Opening Day – while Friday is Ladies Day. Up to 40 horses line up in the Grand National on Saturday, a race which has seen a number of upsets since it was first run in 1839, when aptly won by a horse called Lottery. As recently as 2009, Mon Mome landed odds of 100/1, the same price as Foinavon who, in 1967, benefitted after the rest of the field fell, refused or were hampered or brought down in a mêlée at the 23rd fence. Since 1984, that obstacle has been known as the Foinavon jump one of 30 Fences that the horses must successfully navigate over the Grand National race distance of four miles and 514 yards.
Whether you back a horse because of its Grand National odds, the colour of the jockey’s silks, or because of the horse’s name, everyone has a chance of betting on the winner of the historic race.
