Betting Basics: What are booking points and how much is a yellow card worth?

Bookmakers offer the ability to wager on almost anything, especially online and the chance to create unique bets by combining multiple markets from the same match is a popular option in the modern era.

Coral offers mobile users the ability to build their bet, which can include markets such as goalscorers, corners taken by both teams, and booking points.

What are booking points?

Booking points refer to how many red and yellow cards are shown in the match and can also be bet on separately, instead of part of a Build Your Bet.

How much are yellow and red cards worth in booking points?

A yellow card is worth 10 points and a red card is worth 25 points, and if a player is sent off for two bookable offences they are awarded 35 points instead of 45 as the second yellow card does not count for the purposes of booking points.

For instance, in the image below, 0-20 booking points would be a losing bet if there is a red card in the match, however it allows for up to two cautions – provided they are for different players.

Similarly, 21-40 booking points requires between two and four yellow cards inclusive, or one red card and a maximum of one further caution accompanying the sending off.

At the 2014 World Cup, 187 yellow cards were shown at an average of 2.92 per match, while 10 red cards were also produced throughout the tournament, with three dismissals coming as second yellows.

In the Premier League last season, West Ham players had the worst discipline as they received the most bookings with 73 — along with two red cards – while Liverpool accumulated just 44 yellows and one red to boast the best record.
