Coronavirus forcing NBA Finals to move to Las Vegas?
Will commissioner Adam Silver move the NBA Finals to Las Vegas?
It’s been more than two weeks since the NBA suspended its season because of the coronavirus pandemic. What the schedule looks like when the games return is anyone’s guess. But apparently, one idea is being floated: moving the NBA Finals, according to the Las Vegas Journal-Review.
League executives and agents spoke with CNBC on a condition of anonymity, telling the outlet that the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas has emerged among league personnel as a prime location for the conclusion. The NBA already has rented the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion from July 10-20 to host the annual Summer League.
Earlier this week, the Dallas Morning News reported Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said “hopefully by the middle of May we’re starting to get back to normal and the NBA is playing games, maybe not with fans, but we’re playing games.”
The NBA was the first league to shut down because of the coronavirus, when Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, March 11. The NHL, MLB and NCAA followed suit the next day.
A total of 10 NBA players have been diagnosed with the coronavirus: Gobert, Jazz teammate Donovan Mitchell, Detroit Pistons forward Christian Wood, four players on the Brooklyn Nets (including Kevin Durant), two players on the Los Angeles Lakers, and Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart.
In addition, one member of the Denver Nuggets and three members of the Philadelphia 76ers have tested positive for COVID-19, but neither organization disclosed the names or occupations of those diagnosed.
