How to read College Basketball Las Vegas Money Line Odds

Just pick the winner!

If you’re placing college basketball money line wagers then you’re cheering for one team to capture a straight up victory and nothing more. The betting term Against the Spread (ATS) is tossed out the window for these types of wagers since the point-spread doesn’t come into play.

Similar to our Spread and 1st Half Odds, every matchup is listed in order of Rotation and those numbers are preceded by the Date and Time of the College Basketball game.

You’re always going to have a Favorite and Underdog associated with the Money Line Odds and the plus (+) and minus (-) symbols are used to differentiate the teams. For college basketball money line odds, it’s a simple math formula that’s based on $100 wagers.

Duke -200 (Bet $100 to win $50)
North Carolina +170 (Bet $100 to win $170)

In the above example, Duke is the favorite (-) while North Carolina is the underdog. If a bettor wanted to back Duke, who is expected to win, they would only win $50 on a $100 wager since they are minus-200. Some books will provide an extra option to view their betting odds in Fraction format and Duke would be a 1/2 favorite in this matchup. If you prefer Decimal format, very common overseas, Duke would be 1.5 on the betting board.

Since Duke is the favorite, North Carolina is the underdog and bettors would receive a positive return greater than their initial stake. In this example, a $100 winning wager on North Carolina would net $270 and that includes your $170 win and $100 stake. The fractional odds for this example would be North Carolina at 17/10 and the Decimal conversion would read 2.70.

How to Bet College Basketball Money Line Odds

Since College Basketball often has very large point-spreads due to unbalanced competition, double-digit favorites are very common and you could see some teams laying 30-plus points, even 40 if the oddsmakers believe the game is a complete mismatch.

For the NCAA Tournament, plenty of March Madness bettors love to play parlays with Money Line Odds and try to hit a big ticket while avoiding the heavy point spreads.

The Parlay Calculator is a great tool to see what kind of return you can create while avoiding the pitfalls of risk.

Picking a straight up winner seems easy and if you don’t feel comfortable laying the points, then betting money line wagers is for you. It’s also in your wheelhouse if you believe an underdog can pull off the upset and that happens very often in March Madness.

Higher seeds are known to advance and those tickets offer generous returns. In the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the University of Maryland Baltimore County aka UMBC stunned Virginia 74-54, becoming the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in March Madness. The Retrievers closed as 20-point underdogs against the Cavaliers and the Money Line Odds on the upset paid 19/1 odds (Bet $100 to win $1,900).
