College football Week 5 picks against the spread for every top-25 game

Five matchups between ranked teams highlight the Week 5 college football schedule, which will test our hot streak against the spread.

No. 12 West Virginia travels to No. 25 Texas Tech for a noon game before a primetime slate that includes No. 7 Stanford at No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 4 Ohio State at No. 9 Penn State, No. 20 BYU at No. 10 Washington and No. 19 Oregon at No. 24 Cal. It’s a wonderful week for college football, and Sporting News has its picks against the spread.

Here is a look at our record so far:

Straight up: 73-12, .858 (20-3 last week)
Against the spread: 44-27, .612 (15-7 last week)

And here are SN’s picks against the spread for Week 5 (lines reflect Consensus picks from as of Monday):

North Carolina at No. 16 Miami (-18.5)
8 p.m., ESPN (Friday)
The Tar Heels won a 38-35 shootout with Pitt last week and turned running back Antonio Williams loose, but they have lost twice on the road by 14.5 points. The Hurricanes are 2-2 against the spread this year, and that line looks high given this could turn into a bit of a shootout. Miami wins 38-24 but FAILS TO COVER the spread.

Louisiana at No. 1 Alabama (-49)
Noon, SEC Network
Mississippi State beat the Ragin’ Cajuns by 46, and this is a pick-your-score situation for the Crimson Tide. It depends on how hard that first-half punch is, and the Crimson Tide do outscore opponents 148-20 in the first half. It’s easier to stay away from this spread, but we will make a pick since we have to. Alabama wins 59-7 and COVERS the spread.

Syracuse at Clemson (-22)
Noon, ABC
Trevor Lawrence gets his first start, and that alone should create excitement for the Tigers. The Orange will have Clemson’s attention after last year’s upset. Syracuse averages 49.5 points per game and brings a quick-fire passing game that will try to negate the Tigers’ pass rush. Syracuse is 3-1 against the spread, and they will hang around for a while. The Tigers, however, make a statement here. Clemson wins 55-24 and COVERS the spread.

No. 12 West Virginia (-3.5) at No. 25 Texas Tech
Noon, ESPN2
This line opened at 5.0, and the fact it’s dropped means there’s faith the Red Raiders can match the Mountaineers in what has to be billed as a Big 12 shootout. West Virginia is tied for first nationally in scoring defense (12.3), and that number will go up. But it’s still the difference in this game. West Virginia wins 41-31 and COVERS the spread.

Central Michigan at No. 22 Michigan State (-28.5)
Noon, Fox Sports 1
The Chippewas were blown out by Kansas earlier this season, and they’ve endured a few blowouts to the Spartans since the 29-27 upset in 2009. The Spartans have struggled with turnovers in the early season, and that’s just enough to let the Chippewas slip under the line here. Michigan State wins 41-14 but FAILS TO COVER the spread.
