In the 2019 regular season, both the Cardinals and 49ers were profitable teams to bet on against the spread (ATS).

The Cardinals went 9-5-2 ATS and were an impressive 5-1-2 ATS on the road, per ActionNetwork. The Niners went 9-6-1 ATS, but didn’t fare well at home, going just 3-4-1 ATS at Levi’s Stadium.

Last season, the 49ers closed as a 10-point favorite in their Week 9 road matchup against the Cardinals. The Niners won 28-25, but did not cover.

In Week 11, they hosted the Cardinals and closed as a 9.5-point favorite at some books and a 10-point favorite at others.

The 49ers won 36-26, but were trailing 26-23 with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter, before Jeff Wilson Jr. scored the go-ahead touchdown with 37 seconds to go to put the 49ers up 30-26.

On the ensuing drive, the Cardinals fumbled on a last-ditch lateral attempt. D.J. Reed returned it for a touchdown as time expired to give the 49ers a 36-26 victory. The touchdown led to a miraculous cover or push for 49ers bettors. The Niners never covered the spread until the last second of the game.

So together, the 49ers were 0-1-1 or 1-1 ATS facing the Cardinals last season depending on what line you got in that Week 11 game.

As far as the 2020 season goes, the reigning NFC champion 49ers return much of their roster.

The Cardinals, however, added DeAndre Hopkins via trade from the Houston Texans and drafted play-making linebacker Isaiah Simmons out of Clemson. They should be much improved from the rebuilding 5-10-1 team we saw last season.

Based on last year’s games and the additions in Arizona, it seems like this spread is a little too high in favor of San Francisco.

This shouldn’t be a huge surprise to 49ers fans, as the team was in the same spot at the conclusion of the NFL draft just a few weeks ago.

The release of the league’s schedule, which should be taken with a grain of salt given the continuing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, worked out in the 49ers’ favor compared to 2019 according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Brian Witt.

After last season’s breakout, expectations understandably are sky-high for the Niners in Year 4 of the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch regime.

Given that California governor Gavin Newsom hasn’t given any indication as to when major sports venues can be reopened, this speculation might all be for not. Nonetheless, plenty of success can be expected for the organization whenever the 2020 season can get underway.

49ers, Raiders asked NFL to pair East Coast games together on schedule

49ers, Raiders asked NFL to pair East Coast games together on schedule

West Coast NFL teams that have to travel to the East Coast for games don’t have a good track record.

The body clocks are all screwed up by the 10 a.m. PT kickoff.

The 49ers and Raiders will have to adjust to East Coast games three and four times, respectively, during the 2020 season.

And according to NBC Sports NFL analyst Peter King, both teams asked the league to pair at least two of those East Coast games together in order to limit travel.

“I heard that eight teams asked to have two distant games paired so those teams could take one long road trip instead of two,” King wrote in the latest “Football Morning In America” column. “The Chargers (at Bucs, Saints), Rams (at Eagles, Bills), Jets (at Seahawks, Rams), Dolphins (at 49ers, Broncos), Cardinals (at Panthers, Jets) and Raiders (at Falcons, Jets) all got their road requests answered. My favorite two: San Francisco plays in MetLife Stadium in Weeks 2 and 3—at Jets on Sept. 20, at Giants on Sept. 27, both 10 a.m. PT body-clock games.”

The Patriots also will play back-to-back games against the Rams and Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

After opening the 2020 season at home against the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers will head to New York where they will play two straight games in MetLife Stadium.

The 49ers have routinely stayed on the road when they have back-to-back games a long way from home. In recent years, they’ve used Youngstown, Ohio as their home base between games.

The Raiders, who will be playing their first season in Las Vegas, are scheduled to play in Atlanta in Week 12 and New York in Week 13.

With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impacting travel all over the United States, it makes sense for teams to limit how often they put their players on planes.
