The credentials of Torpedo-Belaz Zhodino as potential challengers for the league title in Belarus this year comes under early season scrutiny today as they go off to meet the country’s most successful club BATE Borisov.
Torpedo were joint leaders after the first four games of the new campaign in the east European country with three wins under their belt, but have since been overtaken by Slutsk, who won away on Friday night, and joined at the top by Gorodeya, who were away winners on Thursday.
Torpedo can re-establish a two point gap between themselves and the chasing pack but they are away this evening in Borisov against the 13-time Belarus champions, won the league title uninterrupted from 2006 to 2018.
Last year BATE were finally dethroned, finishing second behind Dinamo Brest with Torpedo back in sixth place. Torpedo have never finished higher than fourth but this could be their year.
Previous trips to BATE, however, have not been successful. They have lost the last three vists although did upset them in 2016.
BATE started the season slowly but if they win tonight will have registered a third successive league win. But there is a growing sense their glory days are behind them.
Tonight’s pool also sees defending champions Dinamo Brest in action away at Vitebsk. Brest have made a mediocre start with seven points from four games but are unbeaten in their last seven clashes against their hosts.
Soccer 6 punters can also bet on football action in Nicaragua and Tajikistan, the other two countries where league football continues.
